Swissterminal optimises Schweizerzug 2025: Improved service and stable prices

5. December 2024

Swissterminal continues to focus on quality and efficiency in its intermodal solutions for 2025, meeting customer demands in a challenging market environment. With direct connections, inclusive transfer costs, and stable barge prices, the company strengthens hinterland links to the European seaports of Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Direct connections to Antwerp and Rotterdam: more service for customers

The Schweizerzug train will continue to serve the K1700 and K1742 terminals in Antwerp directly three times a week in 2025. Starting next year, all terminals on the right bank of the Scheldt will be connected by truck. The costs for these truck transfers are fully included in the rail freight charges, offering customers significantly improved transit times and notable cost savings.

In Rotterdam, Swissterminal will directly serve the RWG, ECT Delta, and, starting in February 2025, APM2 terminals three times a week. The direct connection to APM2 enhances transit times and service quality as no additional transfers are required. For terminals not directly connected, truck transfers remain fully included in the rail freight charges.

“The new transfer regulations and the direct connection of additional terminals underscore our commitment to making our customers’ logistics processes as efficient and cost-effective as possible,” says Roman Mayer, Chairman/CEO of Swissterminal.

Stable prices despite rising costs

Despite increasing track access charges in Germany (+16.2%) and inflation-related cost increases in the Benelux region, Swissterminal is implementing only moderate rail freight price adjustments. Export prices for Rotterdam remain stable, supporting the competitiveness of customers.

Reliable barge service: strengthening hinterland connections

The barge service, which has been successfully established on the market since February 2024, will continue to offer two departures per week to Rotterdam and Antwerp in 2025. This means it remains a reliable alternative to rail connections. Prices will remain stable.
By combining rail and barge services, Swissterminal offers a redundant transport solution, enhancing the stability of connections between European seaports and the hinterland. This multimodal approach ensures greater planning reliability and flexibility, particularly in times of infrastructural or market-related disruptions.
