Widnau–Frenkendorf added to the network / Launch on 4 August 2025 / Connection to European seaports
Schweizerzug continues to grow: Starting 4 August 2025, Schweizerzug by Swissterminal will launch a new direct rail service between Widnau (SG) and Frenkendorf (BL). The so-called Widnau Express expands the existing network with a powerful link from Eastern Switzerland to the major European seaports.
The new route will be served twice weekly, enabling companies in the Rhine Valley, Vorarlberg, Liechtenstein, and southern Germany to directly access Swissterminal’s intermodal transport solutions. The Frenkendorf terminal provides established Schweizerzug connections to Rotterdam and Antwerp with multiple weekly round trips. The connection to Genoa, operated in close partnership with PSA, complements the network ideally towards the Mediterranean region.
“With the Widnau Express, we are closing an important gap in Swiss combined transport – fast, direct, and climate-friendly,” says Matthias Dischinger, CEO of Swissterminal AG. “Together with our partners, we aim to strengthen Eastern Switzerland’s integration into European trade.”
Flexible transport solutions – from port2door to door2port
The Widnau Express is available either as a pure rail service or in combination with pre- and post-carriage by truck. Customers can choose complete door2port or port2door solutions or book specific segments – as needed.
First departure: Monday, 4 August 2025
Bookings are now open. Further information about the schedule and booking process is available at: https://www.swissterminal.com/en/intermodal/#rail-schweizerzug
